IDF Takes Out Senior Jama'a Islamiya Operative in Lebanon
Hussein Atwi, a key Hamas-linked operative behind rocket attacks and infiltration attempts, killed near Beirut.

In a decisive counterterrorism operation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed Tuesday the targeted killing of Hussein Izzat Mohammad Atwi, a senior member of the Jama'a Islamiya terror group, during an airstrike in Haret El Naameh, south of Beirut, Lebanon.
Atwi was a high-ranking operative closely affiliated with Hamas and the Fajr Forces, a Sunni jihadist faction responsible for numerous rocket attacks on Israeli territory over the past year. He was deeply involved in planning and executing attacks on both Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, particularly along Israel's northern border.
According to the IDF, Atwi’s terror activities included:
Launching rockets into Israel.
Guiding terrorist cells in infiltration attempts.
Coordinating attacks on Israeli targets abroad.
Atwi was operating under the military wing of Jama’a Islamiya, an Islamist terror organization that works in concert with Hamas in Lebanon. The Fajr Forces, with which he collaborated, have been a primary focus of Israeli defensive strikes due to their persistent targeting of northern Israel.
This operation underscores Israel’s ongoing strategy of eliminating key terrorist threats beyond its borders and disrupting coordinated attacks directed by Iran-backed and Hamas-linked cells operating out of Lebanon.
By removing Atwi, Israel not only thwarted future attacks but also delivered a strong message to terror groups operating under Hezbollah and Hamas influence: Israeli security will continue to act wherever and whenever necessary to defend its citizens and sovereignty.
