IDF Joins Moroccan Army in Joint Combat Training for African Lion 2025
Israel's participation in the major multinational drill reflects growing military ties with Morocco and strategic partnerships across Africa.

In a powerful display of growing regional cooperation, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops trained side by side with the Royal Moroccan Army during this year's African Lion 2025 military exercise. Footage released over the weekend captured elite Israeli and Moroccan units conducting advanced tunnel warfare drills, showcasing robotic systems and cutting-edge surveillance technologies.
The exercises mark a significant milestone in Israel’s expanding role in multinational defense efforts, particularly within Africa. Held across key Moroccan cities including Agadir, Tiznit, Kenitra, Ben Guerir, and Tifnit, African Lion 2025 brought together more than 10,000 military personnel from Morocco, the United States, and allied nations.
Despite predictable backlash on Arab social media, Morocco's continued collaboration with Israel stands as a bold affirmation of its diplomatic normalization with the Jewish state a relationship that has quietly deepened since formal ties were reestablished.
Israeli soldiers, particularly from the IDF's Golani reconnaissance unit, engaged in sophisticated combat simulations focused on tunnel warfare, a domain in which Israel brings unmatched operational experience. These drills included descent into tunnel networks, deployment of surveillance gear, and coordination of unmanned systems critical tools in the fight against modern asymmetric threats.
African Lion 2025 was not solely about combat readiness. The operation also emphasized humanitarian coordination, with mobile medical facilities deployed as part of emergency response training. This integration of combat and aid demonstrates a holistic approach to regional security.
Moroccan General Mohammad al-Qaysi praised the partnership with the United States and emphasized the importance of strengthening military readiness through joint exercises. The inclusion of Israel in such a prominent role further underscores the trust being built through ongoing security collaboration.
Israel’s participation in African Lion began just two years ago, yet its impact is already being felt. As regional alliances evolve, Israel remains a critical partner in securing stability and preparing for shared challenges.
