IDF Reservists to Receive $800M in Government-Approved Benefits

New support package provides tax breaks, housing assistance, and direct aid to soldiers and families as Gaza operations expand.

In a decisive move to recognize and support the growing sacrifices of its citizen-soldiers, the Israeli government on Sunday approved a sweeping benefits package worth 3 billion shekels approximately $800 million for active Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reservists.

The landmark initiative was championed by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and Justice Minister Yariv Levin, with the aim of easing the burden on reservists and their families as the military prepares to expand ground operations in the Gaza Strip.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the state’s responsibility to those who serve. “Our reservists do everything for the country,” he said. “We must give them everything. Our principle is simple: Those who contribute to the state will be generously rewarded.”

The comprehensive support package includes:

  • Tax credit points for reservists and their families

  • Grants for employers who retain reservist employees

  • Priority in subsidized housing programs

  • Post-service grants for discharged soldiers

  • A “digital wallet” providing up to 5,000 shekels ($1,330) for welfare expenses

  • Support for small businesses affected by reservist service

  • Streamlined access to civil service positions

  • Targeted assistance for immigrant reservists

  • Priority access to government services

Minister Smotrich praised the move as an essential investment in Israel’s most devoted defenders. “They leave behind families, work, and their normal lives to serve. The least we can do is provide them with a comprehensive support system,” he said. “Today’s package builds on earlier efforts, totaling billions already allocated.”

Defense Minister Katz highlighted the broader context: “Reservists bear the weight of the seven-front war. The state embraces those who carry the burden and gives them the means to lead us to victory.” Katz noted the total support allocated to reservists and their families has now reached 20 billion shekels.

The timing of this announcement is significant. On May 4, Israel’s Security Cabinet voted unanimously to expand the military offensive against Hamas in Gaza. Earlier in March, the government authorized a massive mobilization of up to 400,000 reservists underscoring the scale of the ongoing national effort.

This latest move reflects Israel’s enduring commitment not only to victory on the battlefield, but to honoring those who make it possible.
