IDF Recovers Bodies of 6 Hostages Killed in Gaza
Israel Vows to Continue Efforts to Bring All Hostages Home.
In a somber operation on Tuesday morning, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recovered the bodies of six hostages who were kidnapped during the October 7 massacre and held by Hamas in the southern Gaza Strip. The operation, which took place in a tunnel in Khan Younis, involved both the IDF and the Israel Security Agency, marking a heartbreaking development for the families of the victims.
The hostages recovered were identified as Avraham Munder, Yoram Metzger, Nadav Popplewell, Yagev Buchshtav, Chaim Peri, and Alex Dancyg. Their bodies were found more than ten months after the brutal attack that led to their abduction. With these recoveries, the number of hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza now stands at 109.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, while also reaffirming Israel's commitment to bring home all the abductees. “Our hearts grieve over the terrible loss. My wife Sara and I convey our heartfelt condolences to the dear families. I would like to thank the brave IDF and ISA fighters and commanders for their heroism and determined action,” Netanyahu stated.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog also emphasized the nation’s duty to continue these efforts, calling it a "supreme moral duty of the State of Israel" to ensure the return of all abductees. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant praised the operation as a "daring and dangerous" mission in the Hamas tunnels, reflecting the ongoing resolve of the IDF to dismantle Hamas and secure the safety of all Israeli citizens.
Each of the recovered hostages had a life filled with contributions to their communities, making their loss particularly poignant. Avraham Munder, 79, was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz along with his family, many of whom have since been released. Yoram Metzger, 80, also a member of Kibbutz Nir Oz, was known for his work at the Nirlat factory and the kibbutz winery. Chaim Peri, another 80-year-old member of Kibbutz Nir Oz, was remembered as an entrepreneur, humanist, and peace activist who saved his wife before being kidnapped.
Yagev Buchshtav, 34, a resident of Kibbutz Nirim, had a deep passion for music and was a sound technician by profession. His wife, Rimon, was also kidnapped but was released in November. Alex Dancyg, 76, a historian and educator who worked at Yad Vashem for nearly 30 years, was particularly known for his dedication to Holocaust education. He continued his passion even in captivity, giving history lectures to fellow hostages.
Nadav Popplewell, 51, a British Israeli, was kidnapped from his home in Kibbutz Nirim. His mother, Channah Peri, was released in November, but Popplewell’s death was announced earlier in June.
The loss of these individuals is a profound tragedy, but their memories live on through the lives they touched and the communities they enriched. The IDF and Israel's leadership remain steadfast in their mission to bring all remaining hostages home, honoring their commitment to those who are still missing.
