Robotic Exoskeleton at Sheba Hospital Helps Injured IDF Soldier Walk Again

Months after being paralyzed in Gaza, Daniel takes steps toward recovery with groundbreaking technology and Israeli innovation.

In a powerful testament to the resilience of Israeli spirit and medical innovation, Daniel, an IDF soldier severely wounded in Gaza, is walking again thanks to advanced robotic exoskeleton technology at Sheba Medical Center.

Daniel was shot in the back by a terrorist during combat in Gaza and initially given a dire prognosis. Doctors warned his mother that he would likely remain paralyzed from the neck down. But at Sheba Rehabilitation Center in Tel Hashomer, near Tel Aviv, a new chapter began.

After months of intense treatment and the use of the Atalante X robotic exoskeleton, Daniel has defied the odds. “They didn’t think I’d make it,” he shared. “Then they assumed I’d be in a vegetative state. But now, I’m walking just a few steps. The robot follows my lead when I stop, it stops.”

Developed by the French-American company Wandercraft, the Atalante X is among the most advanced rehabilitation tools in the world. With 12 powered joints and real-time motion algorithms, it mimics natural walking, allowing severely injured patients to regain mobility and independence without relying on hand support.

“It’s about more than just walking it’s about restoring quality of life,” said Hanania Sharon, head of physiotherapy at Sheba’s rehabilitation hospital. “The device responds as the patient moves. It doesn’t just build strength; it reignites motivation and hope.”

Since the October 7 attacks, Sheba Rehabilitation Center has treated 2,000 wounded soldiers, with an astounding 99.8% survival rate a reflection of the center’s world-renowned expertise and care.

Daniel’s progress is not just medical it’s deeply human. “I’m already thinking ahead,” he said with a smile. “To walking again. To finding a good job. To driving.”

His story is a reminder of what Israel stands for: life, innovation, and unbreakable determination.
