IDF Launches Operation Against Hamas Leader Mohammed Sinwar

Airstrike on Hamas command center beneath Gaza hospital marks major escalation in Israeli campaign.

The Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet security agency carried out a precision strike Tuesday targeting Mohammed Sinwar, Hamas’s top military commander in Gaza and brother of slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. The airstrike, conducted beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, is part of Israel’s escalating efforts to dismantle Hamas’s leadership and terror infrastructure.

Israeli fighter jets deployed bunker-busting munitions to penetrate the underground complex, which according to Israeli officials housed dozens of high-ranking Hamas operatives coordinating attacks. While Mohammed Sinwar’s status remains unconfirmed, the IDF is actively assessing the outcome of the operation.

Sinwar rose to military prominence following the death of his brother Yahya earlier in the war. Since then, Israeli intelligence has identified him as a central figure orchestrating Hamas’s operational strategy from southern Gaza.

Footage released by the IDF appears to show Hamas infrastructure beneath the hospital. Israeli officials reiterated that Hamas’s strategy of embedding military assets within civilian sites is a flagrant violation of international law. “We will not allow Hamas to hide behind hospitals or humanitarian sites,” declared Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz. “We will strike its leaders wherever they are hiding until we achieve our war objectives freeing our hostages and eliminating Hamas’s military capabilities.”

Casualty figures following the strike remain disputed. Arab media and the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry reported up to 29 fatalities and over 70 injuries, but those numbers have not been independently verified. The ministry does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its figures.

The European Hospital has long been viewed by Israeli intelligence as a strategic Hamas site, doubling as a civilian medical facility and a hub for command and control operations. The use of such locations by terror groups puts countless lives at risk and complicates Israel’s mission to neutralize threats while minimizing civilian casualties.

This strike comes amid broader Israeli operations across Gaza. In Jabalia and Khan Yunis, Hamas-run agencies claimed additional deaths from IDF actions. The Khan Yunis Brigade, known for its deep ideological commitment and entrenched positions, continues to mount resistance in the area.

Tuesday’s operation is a clear message: Hamas’s leadership is within reach, and Israel remains unwavering in its commitment to securing its citizens and returning the hostages taken on October 7.
