IDF Sends Tanks to Jenin for the First Time Since 2002

‘Operation Iron Wall’ Expands as Israel Targets Terrorist Strongholds.

For the first time since “Operation Defensive Shield” in 2002, Israeli tanks have been deployed near Jenin in northern Samaria. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Sunday that an armored division is now stationed in the area as part of expanded counter-terror operations under the ongoing “Operation Iron Wall.”

The IDF's escalation follows a surge in terrorism in Judea and Samaria, including last Thursday’s attempted mass bus bombing in central Israel. The operation involves not only tanks but also units from the IDF’s Nahal Infantry Brigade and the elite Duvdevan commando unit, which have initiated operations in surrounding villages.

Three tanks from the 53rd Armored Battalion were seen entering a neighborhood within Jenin. Security sources indicated that the IDF might use fighter jets to support the expanding military actions, a significant step in combating terrorism in the region.

Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that IDF forces will remain in Samaria’s refugee camps cleared of terrorists and civilians for at least the next year, preventing any return that could reignite terrorism. “Forty thousand Palestinians have so far evacuated from the Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams refugee camps,” Katz said, confirming that United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) activities in these areas have also been halted.

Katz emphasized that Israel is “at war with Islamic terror in Judea and Samaria” and reiterated the IDF’s mandate to prevent the resurgence of terrorist infrastructure. The military may establish posts within cleared camps to maintain security.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the IDF’s efforts during a visit to Tulkarem camp on Friday. “We are entering the strongholds of terrorism, leveling entire streets used by terrorists, and eliminating terrorists and commanders,” he stated. He also highlighted Israel’s determination to take “extremely important measures against Hamas and other terrorist entities.”

This strategic deployment comes after Thursday’s explosions in Bat Yam and Holon, south of Tel Aviv, where five bombs intended for a mass-casualty attack were discovered. The bombs, set to detonate simultaneously, were found in empty, parked buses. One of the devices bore a note stating, “Revenge from the Tulkarem refugee camp.”

On Sunday, Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, while touring northern Samaria, called for the annexation of Judea and Samaria. “These biblical, original parts of our land... are intended for us, for the people of Israel,” he said, underscoring the historical and strategic significance of these areas to Israeli sovereignty.

As “Operation Iron Wall” continues, Israel demonstrates its resolve to eradicate terrorism and ensure security for its citizens. The deployment of tanks and potential air support reflect a clear message: Israel will not tolerate threats to its security.
