IDF General Staff Commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day at Yad Vashem

Military leaders honor survivors and reflect on Jewish strength and rebirth 80 years after WWII.

On Monday, members of the IDF General Staff, led by Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, visited Yad Vashem in Jerusalem to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day and mark 80 years since the end of World War II. The solemn visit paid tribute to the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust and honored the resilience of those who survived.

The delegation met with Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan and attended a powerful lecture by Rabbi Tamir Granot, a noted scholar on Jewish philosophy and Holocaust remembrance. Rabbi Granot spoke about the Jewish people’s capacity to “rise from the depths of pain and loss, and to embrace life, growth, and recovery.”

During the visit, the generals met Holocaust survivor Lea Balint, presenting her with a certificate in recognition of her story and her strength. The ceremony took place in the presence of Limor Livnat, Chair of the Foundation for the Welfare of Holocaust Victims, who commended the IDF’s commitment to preserving memory.

The event concluded with a wreath-laying ceremony in the Hall of Names, Yad Vashem’s memorial to the millions who perished. General Zamir reflected on the enduring connection between Israel’s military and the legacy of survival:

“From crisis to hope, from a beacon to resurrection, from the abyss to growth,” he said words that captured the spirit of a nation forged in memory and built on resilience.

In the shadow of Holocaust remembrance, the IDF’s presence at Yad Vashem underscores a profound truth: the modern Jewish state stands as a response to history’s darkest chapter a living answer to those who tried to erase us.
