India’s Foreign Minister Highlights Israel’s Role in National Security
Foreign Minister Jaishankar highlights strategic partnership built on shared interests.
India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar underscored the nation’s strong security ties with Israel during a parliamentary session on Thursday, emphasizing the significance of their strategic alliance. “Israel is a country with which we have a strong record of cooperation in national security. It is also a country that has stood by us at different moments when our national security was under threat,” he told members of the upper house.
Jaishankar highlighted that India’s export and defense policies prioritize national interests while adhering to international agreements, such as the Wassenaar Arrangement. This balanced approach enables India to maintain robust partnerships, particularly in defense and technology, without compromising its geopolitical responsibilities.
The partnership between India and Israel has flourished since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 1992. Over the decades, the two nations have collaborated on key areas such as missile defense, cybersecurity, and advanced technologies. Israel has been a reliable ally for India, offering crucial support during times of regional tension.
Israel Economy Minister Nir Barkat, speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Partnership Summit in Delhi earlier this week, reiterated the depth of this alliance. Barkat highlighted Israel’s advanced expertise in fields like cybersecurity, desert technology, and climate change solutions areas that align closely with India’s strategic goals. “Israel knows how to partner with global partners that share the same values and interests,” Barkat said, emphasizing mutual respect and collaboration.
Barkat also reflected on the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks in Israel, describing them as one of the gravest atrocities since the Holocaust. He praised India’s unwavering support during the crisis and called for greater cooperation to confront global instability and security threats.
The India-Israel partnership extends beyond defense and security. Collaboration in innovation, agriculture, and sustainable technologies underscores the depth of their relationship. Both nations are working to scale their economic ties significantly, with Israel aiming to increase its exports from $160 billion to $1 trillion within the next two decades.
As Jaishankar affirmed, India’s foreign policy remains rooted in pragmatism and shared values. Strengthening ties with Israel not only bolsters India’s national security but also lays the groundwork for innovation and growth across multiple sectors.
