Planes from Europe Arrive to Help Israel Battle Jerusalem Wildfires
Aircraft from Croatia, Cyprus, Italy, and France join Israeli squadrons in massive international firefighting effort amid record-breaking blazes.

As wildfires rage across the Jerusalem hills, international support has arrived to bolster Israel’s aerial firefighting campaign. Aircraft from Cyprus, Croatia, Italy, and France are joining Israeli squadrons in a coordinated effort to suppress what has become one of the most challenging blazes in recent years.
The Israeli "Elad Squadron," which operates American-made Air Tractor AT-802 planes, is at the core of this battle. These nimble aircraft, capable of carrying 3,000 liters of fire retardant, are specially designed for mountainous terrain like that around Jerusalem. Although limited in payload, their agility and precision make them indispensable in navigating Israel’s rugged topography.
Israel has also deployed a powerful C-130 Hercules aircraft retrofitted with the MAFFS 2 system, enabling it to carry 12,000 liters of fire retardant. This system is particularly effective in low-visibility conditions and nighttime operations, offering a critical edge as crews battle the flames around the clock. However, its size requires longer runways and restricts its use to more open terrain.
Cyprus was the first country to respond, sending aid helicopters and firefighting aircraft that arrived swiftly on Israeli soil. Croatia followed with its renowned CL-415 "Super Scoopers," capable of drawing water directly from natural sources like the Mediterranean. With a 6,000-liter capacity, these planes excel in rapid refills and repeated sorties near water bodies.
Italy is contributing two more aircraft, while France is sending Dash 8 Q400 planes high-capacity aircraft that can carry nearly 10,000 liters of fire retardant per trip. These aircraft, although requiring proper airstrips, are ideal for covering wide, flat areas and can support broader perimeter containment.
This multinational cooperation highlights the deepening strategic and humanitarian ties between Israel and its allies. Fire knows no borders, and in times of environmental crisis, shared technology, training, and commitment to life-saving action take center stage.
More than 120 firefighting teams are currently on the ground in Israel, working tirelessly to contain the inferno. So far, approximately 15 people have sustained minor injuries, most of whom have already returned home. The economic damage is expected to climb into the hundreds of millions of shekels.
These wildfires, fanned by fierce winds and soaring temperatures, have not only scorched land but also forced the cancellation of major Independence Day celebrations a painful reminder of nature’s destructive power. Yet the swift and generous international response underscores the unwavering support Israel receives when it needs it most.
Israel continues to stand firm, protected by a blend of technological excellence, courageous emergency services, and strong international partnerships. Share this story and subscribe to our newsletter for more updates on Israel and its allies.
