Iran Appoints Mojtaba Khamenei as New Supreme Leader
The son of the slain Iranian leader takes power as the war with Israel and the United States enters a critical phase.

Iran’s ruling clerical establishment has named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader, confirming that the Islamic Republic’s hardline leadership remains firmly in control during its escalating conflict with Israel and the United States.
The announcement came just after midnight in Tehran, when the Assembly of Experts the powerful body of 88 clerics responsible for selecting Iran’s supreme leader declared that Mojtaba Khamenei would succeed his father, Ali Khamenei.
“By a decisive vote, the Assembly of Experts appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third Leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the assembly said in a statement.
The role of Supreme Leader is the most powerful position in Iran’s political system, granting Mojtaba Khamenei ultimate authority over the country’s military, intelligence agencies, judiciary, and strategic policies.
His appointment follows the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed during the opening phase of the ongoing conflict between Iran and the U.S.–Israel alliance.
For years, Mojtaba had been viewed as a leading contender to inherit the position. Though a mid-ranking cleric, he developed significant influence behind the scenes through his close ties with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and powerful economic networks tied to the ruling establishment.
The leadership transition comes as the war enters its second week.
Israel and the United States have continued to strike Iranian military infrastructure, targeting missile depots, energy facilities linked to the war effort, and senior regime officials.
Among those recently killed was Abolqasem Babaian, the newly appointed head of the military office of the supreme leader.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials reported heavy damage across parts of Tehran, where residents described thick black smoke rising from fuel depots struck in overnight air raids.
Iran’s government condemned the strikes as a dangerous escalation, claiming the attacks could release hazardous materials into the atmosphere.
Israeli officials, however, said the facilities were legitimate military targets used to support Iran’s ballistic missile program and broader war effort.
Despite mounting casualties and infrastructure damage, Iranian leaders signaled they are not seeking a ceasefire.
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said Tehran intends to continue fighting and will “punish aggressors.”
The conflict has already had global consequences, driving up energy prices and disrupting international travel and business operations.
U.S. President Donald Trump has continued to increase pressure on the Iranian regime, demanding what he described as “unconditional surrender.”
Trump also suggested that the United States should have a role in determining Iran’s future leadership.
“If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long,” Trump said in remarks to ABC News before Mojtaba’s appointment was announced.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials are preparing additional diplomatic and military consultations in the region.
Reports indicate that American envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner are scheduled to visit Israel for discussions with Israeli leaders.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the campaign against Iran’s regime will continue with intensified pressure.
“We have an organized plan with many surprises to destabilize the regime and enable change,” Netanyahu said in a recent statement.
For Israel, the goal remains dismantling Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities while weakening the leadership structure directing attacks against the Jewish state.
The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei signals that the Islamic Republic’s hardline establishment is attempting to preserve continuity during a moment of profound turmoil.
