Iranian President and Foreign Minister Killed in Helicopter Crash
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday, confirmed Iranian state media. The incident occurred in the northwestern East Azerbaijan province.
Also among the deceased were Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the regime’s representative in East Azerbaijan, Malek Rahmati, the province’s governor, as well as the helicopter’s pilot and co-pilot. The group was returning from the inauguration of a jointly built dam on the Aras River by Iran and Azerbaijan.
An Israeli official, speaking to Reuters, denied any involvement in the crash, stating, “it wasn’t us.” No official statements have been released from Jerusalem regarding the incident.
In response, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei announced that First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber would temporarily assume control of the executive branch. Mokhber has up to 50 days to organize new elections, as reported by Tehran’s official news agency, IRNA.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has been appointed as the acting foreign minister. The crash was confirmed 16 hours after the helicopter lost contact, following extensive search efforts by the Iranian Red Crescent. Rescuers braved snowstorms and steep mountain terrain to locate the wreckage.
An Iranian official revealed to Reuters that “President Raisi’s helicopter was completely burned in the crash... all passengers are feared dead.” Reports indicate Raisi’s convoy included three helicopters; the other two safely reached their destination despite the foggy weather conditions.
Ebrahim Raisi, known for his hardline stance and referred to as the “Butcher of Tehran” for his involvement in the 1988 execution of political prisoners, assumed the presidency in 2021. He has been a vocal opponent of Israel. Raisi succeeded Hassan Rouhani, who served as president from 2013 to 2021.
The sudden loss of these top leaders leaves a significant impact on Iran's political landscape. The nation now prepares for new elections and the challenges that lie ahead.
