Iranian Missile Attack Inflicts Over $40 Million in Damage on Israel
Israel assesses extensive property damage following Iran's October missile barrage.
Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel on October 1 has caused an estimated 150-200 million shekels ($39-$53 million) in damage, according to an initial report by the Israel Tax Authority. The barrage, which targeted central and northern Israel, resulted in extensive property damage but no direct injuries, as most residents took shelter in time.
The Israeli government received around 2,500 compensation claims following the missile strike, with approximately 2,200 of those related to damaged apartment buildings. One of the hardest-hit areas was Hod HaSharon, a city in central Israel, which accounted for about 1,000 claims. In northern Tel Aviv, a luxury beachfront complex suffered 50 million shekels ($13 million) in damage, though residents had evacuated to shelters, preventing any casualties.
Iran fired more than 180 missiles at Israel, claiming the strike was in retaliation for the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. The attack caused limited human casualties, though one Palestinian in Jericho was killed by falling debris from a missile interception, and a 68-year-old Israeli man in Afula tragically died of stress after entering a safe room.
Israeli officials have vowed to respond to the missile barrage but have not disclosed the timing or targets of their planned retaliation. In the wake of the attack, Israeli media reported that the U.S. is considering deploying Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) batteries to Israel to bolster its air defense capabilities in case of further Iranian missile strikes.
The October 1 attack highlights the ongoing threat posed by Iran and its regional proxies, as Israeli leaders continue to assess the damage and plan their next steps in defending the country.
