Ismail Haniyeh, Head of Hamas, Killed in Tehran
Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Airstrike During Visit to Iran.
Ismail Haniyeh, the chairman of Hamas’s overseas political bureau, was killed on Wednesday morning local time in Tehran, according to Iranian government sources and Hamas social media accounts. Haniyeh, along with one of his bodyguards, was targeted at his guest house while in Iran for the inauguration of the new Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
The Hamas social media channel reported that Haniyeh was killed in a "treacherous Zionist raid." The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed his death in a statement released by the Islamic Republic's state-run media.
The Israeli government has not commented on Haniyeh’s death. Based in Doha, Qatar, Haniyeh was a senior member of Hamas, alongside the terror group’s Gaza leader, Yahya Sinwar.
In the wake of Haniyeh’s death, U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) remarked, "The leader of Hamas has been brought to justice. Permanently. A special place in hell is reserved for him." He added, "Hamas and Hezbollah, their leadership dead, are having a bad day."
Representative Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) also commented, describing Haniyeh as "the terrorist face of Hamas," criticizing his opulent lifestyle in Qatar and Turkey while exploiting Gazans' suffering. "Even the IRGC couldn’t protect him," Waltz noted.
This event marks a significant blow to Hamas, a group designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including the United States and Israel. Haniyeh’s death underscores the ongoing conflict and tensions in the region.
