Israel Severs Ties with UN Palestinian Relief Agency Citing Hamas Connections
New Legislation Ends Cooperation with UNRWA Amid Accusations of Terrorist Infiltration.
Israel has officially severed its ties with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), citing significant concerns over the agency’s alleged links to Hamas. The Israeli foreign ministry announced the termination of the agreement that has governed their relationship since 1967, following recent legislation banning UNRWA from operating within Israel.
This move comes amid longstanding accusations by Israel that UNRWA perpetuates the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by maintaining Palestinians in a state of permanent refugee status. Unlike other refugee populations, Palestinian refugee status is uniquely passed down through generations, which Israel argues fuels the demand for a "right of return" that could undermine the Jewish state.
The latest catalyst for this decision was the October 7 massacre, which Israel attributes to Hamas operatives allegedly embedded within UNRWA. Israeli officials and research organizations have claimed that numerous UNRWA employees either participated in or celebrated the attack, further straining relations between Israel and the agency.
Despite Israel presenting evidence of Hamas infiltration, the UN has not taken action to address these concerns, according to Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon. “Despite the overwhelming evidence we submitted... the UN did nothing to address this reality,” Danon stated.
The new Israeli law prohibits any cooperation with UNRWA within Israeli territory but does not explicitly outlaw its operations in the West Bank and Gaza. However, the legislation is expected to complicate UNRWA’s ability to function in these areas, especially given the organization's reliance on cooperation with Israeli authorities.
Critics, including some of Israel's Western allies and UN officials, have expressed alarm, fearing that the move could exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Nonetheless, the Israeli government plans to expand activities by other international organizations as alternatives to UNRWA.
This decisive action underscores Israel's broader strategy to combat Hamas and reduce the influence of organizations it accuses of fostering anti-Israel sentiment and perpetuating conflict.
