Israel’s Most Advanced Satellite Soars into Space via SpaceX
Dror-1 marks a new era in Israeli space technology with groundbreaking capabilities and national strategic impact.

In a landmark achievement for Israeli space technology, the Dror-1 communications satellite was launched successfully on Sunday from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Weighing 4.5 tons, Dror-1 is Israel’s most advanced communications satellite to date and is expected to serve the country’s strategic and civilian communication needs for at least the next 15 years.
Developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Dror-1 is set to reach its geostationary orbit approximately 36,000 kilometers above Earth in two weeks. There, it will remain fixed over a single point, ensuring consistent coverage for critical communications. IAI confirmed that initial signals received from the satellite indicate it is functioning properly, with engineers currently conducting a series of systems checks and performance tests.
Among Dror-1’s standout features are its massive 2.8-meter communication dishes the largest ever installed on an Israeli satellite and a 17.8-meter wingspan once its solar panels are fully deployed. These specifications are not just engineering marvels; they signify Israel’s growing capabilities in space-based infrastructure essential for national defense, emergency services, and high-security communications.
IAI CEO Boaz Levy called the launch a “historic step,” underscoring the project’s importance:
“This satellite represents the most sophisticated communications technology Israel has ever put into orbit. Our mission was to secure this strategic capability for the nation and provide a long-term solution for critical communications.”
The project brought together around 560 engineers and specialists, many of whom continued working through the COVID-19 pandemic and regional unrest to ensure the satellite’s completion. It stands as a testament to the perseverance, talent, and dedication embedded in Israel’s scientific and defense communities.
Over the next two weeks, Dror-1 will orbit Earth five times before locking into its final position. Once operational, it will serve as a central node in Israel’s secure communications network a critical asset in an increasingly complex regional landscape.
