Israel Prohibits Phones in Elementary Schools to Improve Focus and Social Skills

Nationwide policy takes effect Feb. 2, extending 2019 classroom phone ban.

Israel’s Education Ministry will prohibit mobile phone use by elementary school children on campus starting February 2, Education Minister Yoav Kish announced Thursday.

The new nationwide policy expands a 2019 rule that banned phones only during class. Under the updated guidelines, phones will be off-limits throughout the school day, including breaks and arrival time.

Phones may still be used in designated classrooms for educational purposes with staff approval.

The ministry said the goal is to improve student focus, foster interpersonal skills, and promote a positive school environment. Officials cited global studies and policy trends, including Australia’s recent ban on social media for users under 16.

Education officials will also roll out awareness programs for parents and staff to support healthy device habits and reduce exposure to harmful content.

“This is a necessary step to give our children the tools they need for real social connection and learning,” said Minister Kish. Share this article or subscribe to our newsletter for updates.
