After 30 Years of Diplomacy, Israel Launches First Embassy in Moldova

Strengthening economic, political, and security ties with a key European ally.

Israel has officially inaugurated its first embassy in Moldova, marking a significant step in the deepening relationship between the two nations. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar attended the opening ceremony in Chișinău, alongside Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mihai Popșoi.

“This is a historic moment that marks a milestone in the relations between our countries,” Sa’ar stated. “Moldova is a friendly nation to Israel. Our policy is to strengthen ties with our allies. Today, we are upgrading our relationship, and we do so with great joy.”

Israel recognized Moldova’s independence in 1991 and established formal diplomatic ties in 1992. While Moldova set up an embassy in Tel Aviv in 1994, Israel had previously maintained a non-resident ambassador to Moldova. The opening of a permanent diplomatic mission in Chișinău is a testament to the growing partnership between the two nations.

Economic cooperation has been a key driver of this relationship. Israeli and Moldovan businesses collaborate in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, energy, IT, software development, and electronics. Moldova’s strategic location in Central Europe and its streamlined trade regulations make it an attractive destination for Israeli investors.

In July 2023, then-Minister of Economy and Industry Nir Barkat met with Moldova’s Ambassador to Israel, Alexandr Roitman, to advance negotiations on a free trade agreement. The discussions also focused on employment opportunities for Moldovan workers in Israel, further strengthening economic ties.

The security dimension of this relationship has also gained importance. With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and increasing ties between Iran and Russia, Israel and Moldova share mutual concerns about regional stability. Ambassador Roitman highlighted Israel’s commitment to Moldova’s security and noted the growing cooperation in this critical area.

This new diplomatic milestone signals a bright future for Israel-Moldova relations, fostering stronger political, economic, and security cooperation. Israel continues to build enduring alliances, expanding its global presence and strengthening its partnerships.
