Israel Deploys Goats, Sheep, and Antelopes as ‘Four-Legged Firefighters’

Innovative Grazing Strategy Helps Prevent Wildfires and Boosts Ecosystems.

As wildfires continue to wreak havoc in California, claiming lives and forcing evacuations, Israel is demonstrating a natural and inventive approach to fire prevention by enlisting an army of grazing animals to safeguard its landscapes. These "four-legged firefighters," including goats, sheep, and even antelopes, are transforming Israel's forests, fields, and army bases one bite at a time.

Israel, a country well-acquainted with the dangers of wildfires, has long sought effective fire mitigation strategies. Among the many solutions, the deployment of over 50,000 grazing animals stands out as a sustainable and eco-friendly initiative. These animals serve as natural pruners, nibbling away at dense undergrowth and trimming low-hanging branches, which helps create critical firebreaks and prevent flames from climbing to the treetops.

“The goal is to create buffer lines and thereby reduce the combustible materials that endanger forest areas during a fire,” explains Ilan Tibi, director of the KKL-JNF Grazing Unit. Working in collaboration with farmers and shepherds, KKL-JNF has developed a structured grazing program that has reportedly prevented approximately 80% of fires in open areas.

This strategy not only mitigates wildfire risks but also provides benefits to local agriculture and ecosystems. Unlike mechanical clearing or chemical treatments, these animals contribute to soil health and biodiversity while maintaining natural landscapes.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have also adopted this method, deploying herds of antelopes and sheep on military bases and sensitive installations for over a decade. The IDF’s Nature Defense Team manages hundreds of animals, which reduce fire hazards and control snake populations particularly around ammunition storerooms and stockpiles.

Israel’s approach is a powerful reminder that sometimes, nature itself holds the answer to complex challenges. As the world watches the devastation caused by wildfires, Israel’s success with "four-legged firefighting" offers a model of innovation, sustainability, and strategic thinking.
