NIS 744M Plan Approved in Israel to Support Hebrew Learning for Arab Communities
Government initiative aims to strengthen societal integration and opportunity through language.
The Israeli government has approved a groundbreaking multi-year national program to promote Hebrew language education among Arabic-speaking citizens. Announced by the Prime Minister’s Office and the Education Ministry, the initiative is budgeted at NIS 744 million and seeks to advance integration and opportunities for Arab-Israelis.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the program as a strategic step for Israeli society. “This significant investment will directly impact the integration of Israeli Arabs into Israeli society and contribute to combating rising crime in Arab communities,” he stated.
Education Minister Yoav Kisch highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting its potential to transform opportunities for young Arab-Israelis. “Arab society is a significant component of the Israeli fabric. This program, with its substantial budgets and educational focus, will help the young generation integrate into academia and industry. It’s a step that strengthens Arab society and Israeli society as a whole,” he said.
The initiative will address key challenges in Hebrew education, including improving the quality of Hebrew teachers for Arabic-speaking students, enhancing teaching and assessment methods, and fostering conversational Hebrew skills.
Social Equality Minister May Golan emphasized accountability in the program’s implementation. “I ensured that every budgetary decision under my ministry’s authority includes mechanisms to guarantee that resources reach the intended beneficiaries,” Golan said. “This program will ensure that Arabic-speaking students learn Hebrew within a mandatory framework.”
Hebrew proficiency is considered vital for Arab-Israelis to access greater opportunities in academia, industry, and public life. By bridging language gaps, the program aims to promote inclusivity and economic growth, benefiting both Arab communities and Israeli society at large.
