Israel Clinches Gold in Men’s Marathon Team Event at European Championships
Ayale, Teferi, and Alame bring pride to Israel with podium sweep in Belgium.

The Israeli men’s track team captured a stunning gold medal in the marathon event at the European Running Championships held in Belgium on Sunday, showcasing not only athletic excellence but national pride during challenging times.
The race, which spanned from Leuven to Brussels, saw Gashau Ayale finish in second place, followed closely by teammates Maru Teferi in third and Haimro Alame in fourth. Their combined placements earned Israel the men’s team gold an outstanding achievement at one of Europe’s most prestigious long-distance events.
The individual title went to Italy’s Iliass Aouani, but the Israeli trio stood tall on the podium, unified and jubilant.
“For me, representing the country these days is amazing,” Ayale told Israeli media after the race. “I wanted to win, but I finished second and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. We want to dedicate this medal to the hostages and to uplift the people. I’m the happiest person in the world.”
Teferi echoed the sentiment: “I’m very happy for myself and for my team. I came here just to run with the rest of the team I wasn’t aiming for the podium. I’m pleased with the bronze medal, and I want to thank everyone.”
In the women’s competition, Israel’s Chemtai Lonah Salpeter and Maor Tiyouri delivered strong performances, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Their efforts earned Israel a second-place team finish.
Salpeter overcame personal hurdles to compete. “I was in a 50/50 state before the race, not feeling great. I had to push myself I injured my back a few weeks ago. I’m glad I managed to finish. I carry my flag with pride,” she said, reflecting on the emotional atmosphere of the event.
The atmosphere in Belgium was electric, with spectators lining the course and cheering every kilometer. For Team Israel, the support fueled their resolve and turned a marathon into a mission of unity and inspiration.
With the World Championships ahead, Israel’s track athletes are proving to the world and themselves that even in trying times, they can go the distance.
