Israel Outlines Comprehensive Medical Protocol for Hostages Released from Hamas Captivity
Returnees will receive specialized care, addressing physical, emotional, and long-term health needs.
The Israeli Health Ministry has unveiled a detailed medical protocol to care for hostages returning from Hamas captivity. The protocol ensures a comprehensive approach, addressing both the physical and emotional recovery of the returnees.
Six hospitals have been chosen to provide initial care: Ichilov, Beilinson, Sheba, Assaf Harofeh, Barzilai, and Soroka, all strategically positioned near Gaza to treat severe cases promptly. Each hospital will house a dedicated “Returnee Wing” designed for privacy and specialized care, including separate areas for family visits, private rooms, and meeting spaces.
The Health Ministry recommends a minimum hospitalization period of four days, allowing returnees to rest, reunite with loved ones, and undergo comprehensive medical evaluations.
A team of emergency medicine specialists will examine each returnee upon arrival, performing extensive testing, including X-rays, CT scans, and blood tests for potential infections or clotting disorders. Special care will be given to individuals at risk of refeeding syndrome, a life-threatening condition caused by rapid reintroduction of food after prolonged starvation.
Returnees will follow personalized dietary plans, beginning with small, liquid-based meals rich in fluids and protein but low in carbohydrates. Blood levels of phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium will be carefully monitored to prevent complications.
Each returnee will have a dedicated care team, including physicians, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, dietitians, and forensic experts. Social workers will provide emotional support, identify key family contacts, and coordinate follow-up care. Forensic physicians will document any medical-legal evidence related to captivity.
Outpatient multidisciplinary clinics will ensure continuity of care, monitoring the hostages’ physical and emotional recovery in the months and years following their release.
A liaison nurse from each returnee’s health fund will oversee post-discharge care, coordinating follow-ups and addressing any ongoing needs. Psychological guidance will focus on trauma recovery, ensuring a smooth reintegration into everyday life.
As Israel prepares for the return of hostages, the Health Ministry’s protocol ensures that each individual receives the care and support necessary to heal from their ordeal.
