72 MKs Call for Taiwan’s Inclusion in Global Forums, Citing Support Since Oct. 7

Knesset members praise Taiwan’s steadfast support for Israel and call for its participation in international organizations.

In a rare show of cross-party unity, 72 members of Israel’s Knesset have signed a joint statement condemning the exclusion of Taiwan from key international forums, calling the move “unjustified and irresponsible.” The initiative, spearheaded by MK Boaz Toporovsky (Yesh Atid), chairman of the Israel-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Association, with support from MK Ohad Tal (Religious Zionist Party), urges Taiwan’s inclusion in organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

“Taiwan is a thriving democracy committed to the principles of freedom, equality, human rights, and the rule of law, despite a challenging geopolitical environment,” the statement reads. “We strongly oppose Taiwan’s exclusion, particularly given its significant contributions during global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The lawmakers emphasized that their stance is consistent with Israel’s “One China” policy but reflects gratitude for Taiwan’s ongoing support. “Israel will always remember who stood by it in its time of need,” said Toporovsky. “After October 7, Taiwan was one of the first to stand by Israel and has continued to support us diplomatically and through assistance for victims, health initiatives, education, and more.”

Tal echoed this sentiment, calling Taiwan “a true friend of Israel” and stressing the importance of standing alongside Taipei. “Israel and Taiwan share many common interests, and Taiwan continues to show its unwavering support for Israel, especially during this war. This is our opportunity to express our deep appreciation,” he said.

Taiwan’s representative in Israel, Ya-Ping (Abby) Lee, hailed the Knesset’s declaration as “an unprecedented and historic step.” She added “This joint statement sends a powerful message to the world: in times of mounting pressure from authoritarian regimes, democracies must stand together in solidarity.”

The lawmakers also called on Israeli business, academic, and public sectors to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan, citing the island nation’s drive for innovation and progress. “I am proud that the majority of Israeli lawmakers have expressed their gratitude to Taiwan and their support for its continued positive international engagement,” Toporovsky concluded.

This initiative underscores the deepening friendship between Israel and Taiwan, grounded in shared democratic values and mutual support during challenging times.
