Police Break Up Illegal Cockfighting Ring Near Ness Ziona

150 cockerals rescued in raid exposing brutal animal abuse and underground gambling.

In a coordinated weekend raid, Israeli police dismantled an illegal cockfighting ring near Ness Ziona and rescued 150 cockerals subjected to horrific abuse. The birds caged and forced to fight for gambling entertainment were discovered by officers acting on a tip about animal cruelty in a quiet agricultural neighborhood.

Led by the Rehovot police station and supported by the Environmental Protection Unit, the Agriculture Ministry’s enforcement division, and a municipal veterinarian, the operation uncovered a gruesome underground arena where patrons wagered on violent bird fights. The animals, known for their territorial aggression, were deliberately pitted against one another in blood sport competitions.

“This is a clear case of systematic animal abuse and organized illegal gambling,” said a spokesperson from the police force. Authorities conducted undercover surveillance of the location before launching the raid, which resulted in the detention of two foreign nationals and the property owner for questioning.

Cockfighting is a serious criminal offense in Israel, where animal welfare laws prohibit the use of animals for entertainment involving violence or suffering. The recent raid highlights a troubling pattern of foreign nationals bringing the practice into Israel. In 2022, two Thai nationals were caught operating a similar ring near the Gaza border, and in 2018, six others were arrested in central Israel for similar activities.

While cockfighting remains a legal and culturally ingrained form of gambling entertainment in Thailand, Israeli law reflects different values those that protect animal welfare and uphold moral standards against cruelty. The rescued birds are now under veterinary care, and authorities are expected to press charges related to both animal cruelty and illegal gambling.

Israeli police have reaffirmed their commitment to investigating and shutting down illegal animal fighting operations, emphasizing that such cruelty will not be tolerated. Officials also called on the public to report any suspected cases of abuse or illegal activity related to animals.

This operation is a testament to Israel’s dedication to upholding law, order, and ethical treatment of animals. It’s a reminder that even in the face of global challenges, Israel remains vigilant in defending both the vulnerable and the voiceless.
