Israeli Politicians Share Reactions to Attempt on Trump's Life

Across the Political Spectrum, Israel Condemns the Attack and Expresses Support for Trump

In a rare display of unity, Israeli politicians from all sides have expressed overwhelming support for Donald Trump following the assassination attempt on his life at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The incident has drawn strong reactions, with leaders condemning the violence and wishing the former president a swift recovery.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the attack on the former president and presumptive Republican nominee as "not only a heinous crime but also an attempt to assassinate American democracy." At the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Netanyahu extended his best wishes for Trump's speedy recovery on behalf of himself, his wife Sara, the ministers of the Israeli government, and the entire Israeli people.

Netanyahu had earlier expressed his shock on social media, praying for Trump’s safety and speedy recovery. Foreign Minister Israel Katz tweeted his dismay at the shooting, emphasizing that "violence can never ever be part of politics."

Opposition leader Yair Lapid also weighed in, calling the shooting "greatly troubling and dangerous." He stressed that political violence poses an existential threat to democratic systems and extended his wishes for Trump's speedy recovery.

The shocking event occurred at a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump was shot and rushed off stage, bleeding from his right ear. Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger confirmed that the shooter was dead and one rally attendee was killed. The Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, a suburb of Pittsburgh.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant shared his thoughts and prayers for the families affected by the event and condemned the violent attempt to disrupt American democracy. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir simply tweeted, "God bless Trump," while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich shared his prayers from the Holy Land for Trump’s recovery.

Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli attributed the attack to a campaign of incitement and delegitimization against Trump, drawing a parallel to what he perceives as similar incitement against Netanyahu in Israel. Chikli criticized law enforcement agencies for overlooking these campaigns due to political biases.

Former War Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz expressed confidence in the resilience of American democracy, attributing it to the tenacity of the American people. He condemned the violence and wished Trump a swift recovery, asserting that the U.S. will undoubtedly overcome this difficult moment.

The unified response from Israeli politicians underscores the close ties between the two nations and their mutual commitment to democratic values and stability.
