Israel Begins Production of Advanced Reshef Warships
New Vessels to Strengthen Navy and Boost Local Defense Industry.

Israel’s Defense Ministry and Israel Shipyards have officially begun production of the new Reshef warships for the Israeli Navy, marking a major step in enhancing the nation’s maritime defense capabilities. The announcement came after a ceremonial event on Tuesday, where the two parties confirmed the start of manufacturing five advanced Reshef vessels.
The Reshef warships are designed to replace the aging Saar 4.5 ships, offering improved speed, maneuverability, and operational efficiency. These vessels are 1,000 tons lighter than the recently deployed Saar 6 ships, making them faster and more agile in maritime operations. The first Reshef ship is expected to be delivered in three and a half years, gradually phasing out the older ‘Nirit’ class vessels that have served Israel for over four decades.
This NIS 2.8 billion project, brokered in December 2024 by outgoing Defense Ministry Director-General Maj Eyal Zamir, is not just about upgrading naval power. It is also a strategic move to bolster Israel’s defense production independence. The Defense Ministry emphasized that the initiative aligns with its policy to expand the local defense industry and support ‘Blue and White’ manufacturing, ensuring that crucial military capabilities remain under Israeli control.
Producing the warships domestically, after decades of foreign procurement, preserves Israel's strategic maritime production abilities and guarantees continuity in defense manufacturing. Additionally, this move is expected to create hundreds of jobs, particularly in northern Israel, contributing to the region’s economic development.
Acting Defense Ministry Director-General Itamar Graf highlighted the significance of resuming IDF warship production at Israel Shipyards after more than 20 years. “This enhances Israel’s sole strategic production line for warships,” Graf stated. He expressed confidence that other countries would soon turn to Israeli-made warships, boosting defense exports and solidifying Israel's position as a leader in naval defense technology.
Vice Admiral David Sa’ar Salama, Navy Commander, noted that the Reshef ships would play a crucial role in safeguarding Israel’s maritime borders and conducting strategic operations both near and far from home. The advanced capabilities of these vessels are expected to significantly strengthen the Israeli Navy’s offensive and defensive capacities.
Sami Katsav, Chairman of Israel Shipyards, expressed pride in contributing to Israel's naval strength while simultaneously supporting local industry. “We see it as a great privilege to strengthen the Navy and the security of Israel. It is equally an honor to be part of a national strategic project that revitalizes the northern region, creating jobs and employment opportunities,” he said.
The launch of Reshef warship production marks a new chapter in Israel’s maritime defense, reflecting the country’s commitment to maintaining a technological edge while fostering local industry growth. As these advanced vessels set sail, Israel’s Navy will be better equipped to meet emerging security challenges.
