Israel Earns Historic Shutout Victory Over Nicaragua in World Baseball Classic

Dominant pitching and timely hitting secure Israel’s place in the next World Baseball Classic tournament.

Israel’s national baseball team delivered a powerful statement on the global stage with a commanding performance in the World Baseball Classic. In a must-win matchup, Israel’s pitchers combined for a historic shutout, defeating Nicaragua 5–0 in Miami and securing the team’s place in the next tournament.

The victory marked the first shutout ever recorded by Team Israel in World Baseball Classic play. Even more important, it ensured that Israel would finish ahead of Nicaragua in the standings, guaranteeing the blue-and-white a spot in the 2029 World Baseball Classic.

The night belonged to starting pitcher Dean Kremer, who set the tone early with remarkable control and poise on the mound. Kremer consistently located his pitches, mixing speeds and keeping Nicaragua’s hitters guessing throughout his outing.

As he approached his pitch limit in the fifth inning, the tension rose. Nicaragua managed to place the first two runners on base, threatening to swing the momentum. Kremer responded with determination, striking out the next batter before exiting the game after reaching his pitch count.

Reliever Josh Mallitz entered into a difficult situation and quickly faced even more pressure. A walk loaded the bases, energizing the crowd and raising hopes for a Nicaraguan comeback.

But Mallitz remained calm. After falling behind 3–0 to the next hitter, he forced a sharp ground ball to third baseman Jake Gelof. Gelof stepped on third base and fired to first, completing a clutch double play that ended the inning and electrified the Israeli dugout.

That defensive stand became the turning point of the game.

Israel’s offense capitalized immediately in the following inning. Harrison Bader, Zach Levenson, and Cole Carrigg delivered key RBI singles, extending the lead and giving the pitching staff valuable breathing room.

Even with a 5–0 advantage, the Israeli team understood the importance of finishing strong. A group of relievers stepped up to ensure Nicaragua would have no opportunity to rally.

Mallitz, Matt Bowman, Max Lazar, and Tommy Kahnle combined to dominate the rest of the game. Nicaragua failed to record another hit, sealing an impressive two-hit shutout and one of Israel’s most memorable performances in international baseball.

Following the game, Kremer credited catcher CJ Stubbs and manager Brad Ausmus for crafting a smart and disciplined game plan against Nicaragua’s lineup.

Born to Israeli parents and raised in the United States, Kremer has represented Israel internationally since his youth. The victory clearly meant a great deal to him. After the dramatic double play that ended the bases-loaded threat, the usually composed pitcher celebrated with rare emotion.

“I don’t usually get super hyped,” Kremer admitted with a smile after the game.

For him, wearing Israel’s uniform carries deep meaning.

“Representing Israel is one of the greatest sources of pride I have known in baseball,” he said. “We have to stay strong.”

Another standout performance came from Noah Mendlinger, a promising prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Mendlinger reached base four times during the game, finishing 3-for-3 with a walk and playing a central role in Israel’s offensive push.

Looking ahead, Mendlinger has even expressed interest in strengthening his connection to the country by making aliyah and potentially representing Israel in future international competitions, including the Olympic Games.

Manager Brad Ausmus praised the team’s preparation and focus, noting that the matchup required adaptability due to limited information about Nicaragua’s roster.

“It was like a high school game,” Ausmus said, explaining that his team simply focused on playing solid baseball and executing their plan.

The win evened Israel’s record in the tournament after a challenging opening loss to Venezuela. Shortly after the shutout victory, the team faced a much tougher opponent when it took the field against the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican lineup featured some of baseball’s biggest stars, including Manny Machado, Juan Soto, and Fernando Tatis Jr. Despite Israel’s strong effort early in the game, the powerhouse Dominican squad eventually pulled away for a 10–1 victory.

Still, Israel’s players remain optimistic as they head into their final group-stage matchup against the Netherlands. With determination, talent, and growing international experience, the team continues to showcase Israeli pride on baseball’s biggest stage.

Israel’s journey in the World Baseball Classic highlights the country’s expanding presence in global sports. As Israeli athletes continue to compete and inspire worldwide, their achievements reflect the determination and spirit that define the Jewish state.
