Israel to Receive Remains of Slain Gaza Hostage
Hamas says it located body of Israeli captive in Gaza and may hand it over if conditions allow.

In a deeply emotional and challenging moment, Israel is preparing to receive the remains of an Israeli hostage believed killed during the October 7, 2023 attack on the country and held in Gaza by Hamas. The militant group’s armed wing, the Izzadin al‑Qassam Brigades, announced it had located the body of a captured Israeli and stated that it would hand over the remains “today if field conditions are suitable.”
According to the group’s statement, they discovered the body during “ongoing search operations” in southern Gaza and warned that any escalation by Israel would hamper further recovery efforts. Israeli officials confirmed that the hand‑over is expected by Monday evening.
This development comes amid a fragile cease‑fire and complex negotiations between Israel and Hamas. While Hamas has returned several bodies of deceased hostages, challenges remain. According to reports, only a portion of the bodies thus far have been delivered and positively identified.
For the families of the hostages and the Israeli public, this moment carries profound weight. It represents the hope of closure for one family amid the broader tragedy of many still missing or unaccounted for. At the same time, it underscores Israel’s unwavering commitment to bring home every captive, alive or deceased, who was taken during the brutal assault.
As the remains arrive, Israeli forensic teams will conduct identification and verification, ensuring the dignity and respect owed to the fallen and their families. The return of these remains also serves as a reminder of the human cost borne by ordinary Israelis civilians, soldiers, mothers, fathers, children who were seized, held, killed or injured in Gaza.
In the face of tragedy and hardship, Israel’s solidarity stands strong. The state and its people honour every life, demand accountability, and persist in the mission to bring loved ones home.
