Israel Claims to Have Foiled Hezbollah Assassination Plot Targeting Former Defense Official
Shin Bet Foils Assassination Attempt Involving Explosive Device Remotely Controlled from Lebanon
Israel’s Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) announced on Tuesday that it had successfully foiled a Hezbollah plot to assassinate a former senior defense official in the coming days. The agency did not disclose the name of the targeted individual but revealed that an explosive device equipped with a remote detonation system had been seized, along with a mobile phone and camera meant to trigger the bomb from Lebanon.
The plot bears striking similarities to a failed Hezbollah attack at Yarkon Park in Tel Aviv last September, which also targeted a senior Israeli official. The device discovered in this latest attempt is believed to have been constructed by the same Hezbollah infrastructure behind the 2023 incident, further suggesting a coordinated effort by the terrorist group to target high-profile Israeli figures.
Shin Bet emphasized that the operatives responsible for the attack have been under surveillance for some time. "The Shin Bet, alongside its partners in the security system, will continue to utilize all available resources to monitor and thwart Hezbollah's terrorist activities," the agency stated.
This latest plot marks the third time in two years that Hezbollah has planted explosives within Israeli territory. In March 2023, an explosive device was detonated at the Megiddo Junction, severely injuring an Israeli civilian. The terrorist responsible managed to infiltrate Israel using a ladder to bypass the border fence and traveled undetected for several kilometers before the device exploded.
As Israel’s security agencies remain on high alert, ongoing discussions within the political and security leadership are focused on how to respond to Hezbollah’s continued attempts to launch terror attacks from Lebanon.
