Israel and Ukraine Launch Joint Operation to Protect Uman Pilgrims
Influential Turning Point USA founder was a vocal defender of Israel and Jewish causes before his fatal shooting at age 31.

Israel and Ukraine have joined forces in an unprecedented security operation to ensure the safety of tens of thousands of pilgrims traveling to Uman for Rosh Hashanah. The annual pilgrimage, which draws worshippers from around the world to the gravesite of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, will this year be backed by a comprehensive network of police, paramedics, and volunteers from both countries.
Israel’s Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, hosted Ukrainian Ambassador Yevgen Korniychuk, Israeli security officials, and representatives of the Haredi Orthodox community to finalize the plan. The joint initiative will see dozens of Israeli officers deployed to Ukraine, working alongside Ukrainian security services to safeguard the worshippers.
“The State of Israel places supreme importance on the safety of travelers,” Ben-Gvir said. “I welcome the cooperation with the Ukrainian government, which allows for a safe and well-organized pilgrimage to Uman. This is an unprecedented operation, with dozens of police officers and volunteers ensuring a holiday of prayer and joy.”
Ambassador Korniychuk praised the partnership, stressing Ukraine’s commitment despite the ongoing war with Russia. “Ukraine, despite the burden of the Russian war and the severe security situation on the ground, is committed to holding a safe and respectful event in close cooperation with Israel,” he said.
Religious leaders also welcomed the initiative. Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi, Moshe Reuven Azman, noted that his teams would be stationed at border crossings and throughout Uman to provide support. “I welcome this cooperation to ensure that every worshipper can arrive with peace of mind and complete safety,” he said. Rabbi Shimson Blumental, speaking on behalf of Israel’s Chief Rabbi, added: “We will be present on the ground for every need to provide immediate assistance and care, ensuring no worshipper feels alone.”
Amichai Gabai, who mediated between the parties, described the initiative as historic. “An event of this scale requires unprecedented coordination. The cooperation between Israel’s and Ukraine’s security bodies will undoubtedly yield excellent results on the ground.”
Uman, located in central Ukraine, is the burial place of Rabbi Nachman (1772–1810), founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement. For over two centuries, his followers have traveled to his gravesite, particularly during Rosh Hashanah, believing that prayers offered there bring divine blessings. Since the 1990s, Israeli pilgrims have made up the largest contingent, with tens of thousands attending annually.
Despite the complications of war, Ukraine has recognized the site as a national heritage landmark and has committed to maintaining safe access for pilgrims. With Rosh Hashanah beginning at sundown on September 22, both Israel and Ukraine are working to ensure that the journey remains a time of prayer, unity, and spiritual inspiration.
This joint effort highlights the deep connection between Israel, Jewish heritage, and global communities of faith. It underscores the commitment to protect tradition and life even in challenging times. Share this article or subscribe to our newsletter for more stories about Israel and the Jewish world.
