Israel Launches Vaccination Campaign Following Polio Detection in Gaza Sewage

IDF Takes Proactive Measures to Prevent Polio Outbreak.

The Israeli army has initiated a vaccination campaign for soldiers after detecting polio in Gaza sewage samples. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the discovery on Sunday, underscoring the proactive steps being taken to prevent a potential outbreak.

In collaboration with international aid organizations, the IDF has transported approximately 300,000 polio vaccines to Gaza, sufficient for more than one million residents. This significant effort aims to mitigate the spread of the highly contagious virus, which is typically transmitted through contaminated water or food.

Currently, there are no known active polio cases among Palestinians or Israeli soldiers. However, due to the virus's severe consequences, including paralysis, respiratory issues, and death, the IDF is prioritizing preventive measures. Polio often thrives in areas with poor sanitation and inadequate sewage control, making the situation in Gaza particularly concerning.

The discovery of poliovirus type 2 in Gaza's sewage was confirmed by Israel’s Health Ministry and corroborated by the World Health Organization in Egypt. In response, the IDF will provide booster shots to all soldiers serving in Gaza or those preparing for deployment. While these vaccinations are strongly recommended, they are not mandatory for troops.

In addition to vaccination efforts, Israel has increased electricity supplies to Gaza since July 2, aiming to enhance the Strip’s sewage and water desalination systems. This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve public health and sanitation conditions in the region.

The urgency of these health measures is further highlighted by past incidents, such as the tragic death of Staff Sergeant (res.) Hanan Drori in December. Drori succumbed to a fungal infection acquired from contaminated soil in Gaza, despite experimental treatments.

The backdrop to these health initiatives includes the devastating attacks by Hamas on October 7, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and the taking of 252 hostages. Among the 116 remaining hostages, more than 30 are feared dead.
