Israeli Innovation: AI Improves IVF Success by Selecting Viable Eggs
AVIF's AI technology enhances embryo selection accuracy, revolutionizing IVF procedures.
Amid a global decline in birth rates, Israel remains a leader in fertility technology, particularly in enhancing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. Notably, in 2018, Israel had the second-highest number of IVF procedures per capita, just behind Japan.
Since its inception in 1978, IVF has relied heavily on human judgment to select the most viable fertilized eggs for implantation. However, Tel Aviv-based startup AVIF is revolutionizing this process by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with human expertise to improve accuracy in selecting fertilized eggs likely to result in successful pregnancies.
AVIF was co-founded by embryologist Daniella Gilboa and reproductive medicine expert Prof. Daniel Seidman. "He brings the voice of the physician as well as the voice of the patient, and I bring the voice of the embryologist," Gilboa told No Camels.
The core idea behind AVIF is that AI, with its ability to analyze large amounts of biological data, can surpass the human eye in detecting the most viable embryos at critical developmental stages. AVIF’s EMA platform evaluates embryos from Day Zero to Days Five or Six, assigning each embryo a viability score based on its developmental milestones.
The results are impressive. EMA boasts a 38% higher accuracy rate compared to traditional IVF methods. High-scoring embryos, as rated by EMA, have a 70% chance of resulting in successful pregnancies. "This is like endorsing the next generation of IVF," Gilboa says.
AVIF’s innovative approach not only promises to enhance the success rates of IVF but also represents a significant advancement in reproductive medicine, providing hope to countless couples seeking to start a family.
