Israeli F-35 Downs Iranian Fighter Jet in First Combat Air-to-Air Kill
Historic aerial engagement marks the first time an F-35 has destroyed another fighter aircraft during active combat operations.

In a historic moment for modern aerial warfare, an Israeli F-35 fighter jet shot down an Iranian aircraft during the first confirmed dogfight of the ongoing conflict.
The Israel Defense Forces announced Wednesday morning that an Israeli F-35I “Adir” successfully intercepted and destroyed an Iranian YAK-130 jet, marking the first time the stealth aircraft has achieved a manned combat kill against another fighter jet.
The Russian-made YAK-130, originally developed in the 1990s, is typically used as an advanced training platform for pilots preparing to fly modern combat aircraft such as the SU-57. However, the jet can also be configured as a light attack aircraft capable of carrying weapons and conducting combat missions.
The engagement occurred as Israel continues to expand its aerial dominance over Iranian airspace during Operation Roaring Lion.
According to Israeli military officials, Israel and the United States established broad air superiority over Tehran and surrounding regions within the first two days of the conflict.
This dominance has allowed Israeli aircraft to conduct close-range precision strikes known as “stand-in” attacks while remaining in Iranian airspace for extended periods without significant interference.
While Iran’s air force includes a number of fighter jets such as the F-4 and F-5 aging American-built aircraft dating back decades most of its fleet is considered technologically outdated compared to Israel’s advanced F-15, F-16, and F-35 fighters.
Even so, Iranian aircraft can still pose challenges in the operational environment, particularly for drones and reconnaissance missions operating close to targets.
Earlier in the campaign, Israeli jets struck Iranian aircraft on the ground moments before they could take off, destroying an F-4 and an F-5 fighter that were already positioned on the runway.
The successful interception represents a major milestone for the F-35 program.
Israel’s F-35I Adir variant has been extensively adapted for Israeli operational needs and has played a central role in the country’s modern air strategy. Designed for stealth and advanced sensor capabilities, the aircraft allows pilots to detect and engage threats long before being detected themselves.
This latest engagement marks the first time the aircraft has downed another manned fighter jet in combat.
The Israeli Air Force last recorded an aerial kill of an enemy aircraft in November 1985, when an Israeli F-15 “Baz” shot down two Syrian MiG-23 fighters during an engagement over Lebanon.
The air campaign has also seen action from allied forces operating in the region.
British Royal Air Force F-35B jets recorded their own milestone during the conflict by shooting down an Iranian drone over Jordan the first confirmed combat kill by an RAF F-35.
In a separate incident, an RAF Typhoon fighter intercepted and destroyed another Iranian drone heading toward Qatar using an air-to-air missile.
These engagements highlight the expanding role of advanced fifth-generation aircraft in modern warfare, where stealth, sensor integration, and long-range engagement capabilities reshape the dynamics of aerial combat.
Israel continues to target Iranian air defense systems and military infrastructure to maintain its aerial advantage.
The IDF also released footage showing Israeli aircraft striking dozens of Iranian air defense systems across the country, further weakening Tehran’s ability to challenge Israeli operations.
For Israel, maintaining air superiority remains a critical pillar of Operation Roaring Lion as it seeks to dismantle Iran’s missile capabilities and reduce the threat posed to Israeli citizens.
The downing of the Iranian fighter jet underscores the technological edge and operational readiness of the Israeli Air Force.
