Israeli Female Astronaut Joins NASA Mission to Space
Israel strengthens international space partnerships and seeks its first female astronaut.
Israel is preparing to make history by sending its first female astronaut into space, thanks to a groundbreaking agreement with NASA. Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology Gila Gamliel shared the exciting news at the 20th Ilan Ramon International Space Conference in Tel Aviv, emphasizing Israel's growing prominence in the global space industry.
“I received a confirmation from NASA to send the first Israeli woman astronaut into space,” Gamliel announced. “We in Israel have now begun the process of searching for our candidate among our brave women.”
The annual space conference, named after Ilan Ramon, Israel’s first astronaut who tragically lost his life in the 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle disaster, serves as a hub for international collaboration in space exploration. This year’s event featured high-profile attendees, including Omran Sharaf from the United Arab Emirates and Professor Teodoro Valente, president of the Italian Space Agency.
During the conference, Israel and Italy solidified their partnership by signing an agreement to develop a lunar payload. Valente remarked on the deepening relationship, stating, “Our space cooperation is really improving. Just a few days ago, our vice prime minister was in Israel to support cooperation between our two countries—and space is one part of that.”
President Isaac Herzog, in a recorded address from New York, highlighted Israel’s leadership in space innovation. He noted the growing collaboration with countries such as the UAE, a sign of the strengthened ties forged through the 2020 Abraham Accords.
“Despite being a small country, Israel is at the forefront of space exploration and plays a vital role in international space programs,” Herzog stated. “I am confident we will see even more partnerships in the near future that will benefit both Israel and the global space community.”
In addition to sending an Israeli woman to space, the nation is making strides in educational initiatives. Nine nano-satellites designed and built by Israeli high school students, including students from Gaza-border communities, are set to launch aboard SpaceX rockets in March. Or Ziner, a high school senior who led her school’s satellite project, expressed pride in her work, describing it as a meaningful contribution to Israel’s future.
Israel’s ambitious space endeavors continue to build on the legacy of Ilan Ramon. His son, Iftah, reflected on his father’s achievements during the event, saying, “The mission, a mix of different countries and cultures, became a symbol of pride, hope, and possibility for Israel and the Jewish community worldwide.”
“Twenty years ago, we began a journey that changed how the world views Israel’s role in space exploration,” Gamliel added. “By fostering international partnerships, we are reinforcing Israel’s position as a global leader in space innovation while contributing to humanity’s quest to explore the stars.”
Israel’s determination to expand its presence in space not only inspires its people but strengthens its bonds with nations across the globe. Stay tuned as the country selects its first female astronaut to carry this vision forward.
