Israeli Foreign Minister Revokes Diplomatic Status of Norwegian Representatives

Norwegian representatives lose diplomatic privileges in Israel over perceived anti-Israel actions.

In a decisive move, Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz has revoked the diplomatic status of eight Norwegian representatives stationed at Norway's embassy in Tel Aviv. These diplomats were responsible solely for liaising with the Palestinian Authority (P.A.) in Ramallah. This action signals a significant diplomatic shift, underscoring the tensions between Israel and Norway over recent political developments.

The Norwegian legation's head received a formal letter from Israel's Foreign Ministry, which stated, “The Ministry hereby informs the Embassy that the State of Israel will no longer facilitate Norway’s representation to the Palestinian Authority.” This decision effectively revokes the diplomatic status of the Norwegian officials within seven days, although their visas will remain valid for three more months.

This diplomatic row follows actions by Norway perceived as anti-Israel, particularly since the Hamas invasion on October 7. According to Katz, Norway has demonstrated an unfriendly stance by recognizing a Palestinian state instead of aligning with Israel in its fight against terrorism. He remarked, “There is a price for anti-Israel behavior,” emphasizing the consequences of Norway’s recent actions.

Katz criticized Norway's support of the International Criminal Court's investigation into Israel, as well as what he described as "one-sided" statements by Norwegian officials against Israel. He pointed to Norway’s independent moves regarding the Palestinian Authority as contributing factors to this decision.

The move is expected to be “particularly painful” for Oslo, given Norway's prominent role in Palestinian affairs. In a related action, Israel also canceled a previous agreement with Norway that involved holding P.A. taxes and customs duties in safekeeping. This agreement aimed to freeze funds destined for Hamas in the Gaza Strip, but the recent tensions have led to its dissolution.

Israel's firm stance highlights the complexities of international relations and the sensitive nature of diplomatic negotiations involving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As these events unfold, Israel remains committed to defending its national interests and ensuring its security in a challenging geopolitical landscape.
