Israeli Cabinet Poised to Approve Gaza Ceasefire Agreement

A complex truce involving hostage releases and prisoner swaps is set to begin Sunday.

Israel’s Security Cabinet convened Friday morning to deliberate on a critical ceasefire agreement with Hamas, set to bring a temporary halt to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The proposed deal outlines a phased exchange: the release of 33 Israeli hostages—alive or deceased over six weeks, in return for 1,000 Palestinian prisoners currently held in Israeli custody. The Security Cabinet’s approval will pave the way for a full Cabinet vote, scheduled for Saturday night.

The ceasefire is expected to commence at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday. Shortly after, around 4 p.m., the first three hostages, all women, are set to be released. This will mark a significant milestone in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas-led massacre, during which 98 individuals were abducted into Gaza. Tragically, it is believed that at least one-third of these captives are no longer alive.

The agreement also addresses two Israelis with mental illnesses who independently crossed into Gaza and are currently held by Hamas, along with the remains of two fallen IDF soldiers.

A second phase of the ceasefire aims to secure the release of the remaining hostages. In exchange, Israel will free additional Palestinian prisoners and undertake a near-complete withdrawal of its forces from Gaza.

The situation reflects the complexities and high stakes of negotiating with Hamas, as Israel seeks to secure the safe return of its citizens while balancing security concerns. This truce, if implemented as planned, may provide a temporary reprieve from violence, but the broader implications remain uncertain.

Israel continues to demonstrate its commitment to the protection of its people and the return of its citizens. The country’s resilience in facing threats and its efforts to navigate such delicate agreements highlight its determination to uphold its values even under immense pressure.
