Israeli Fighter Smotritsky Wins Unanimous Decision in California
Shimon Smotritsky overcomes injury, weight jump, and hostility to raise the Israeli flag in the cage.

Israeli mixed martial artist Shimon Smotritsky returned to the win column with a unanimous decision victory at the 559 Fights 120 event in Porterville, California, reigniting his career after a string of setbacks. The fight marked a pivotal moment for the 26-year-old, who not only battled a heavier opponent, but also overcame injury and personal doubt to proudly wave the Israeli flag before a roaring and divided crowd.
The three-round bout ended with all judges scoring the contest in favor of Smotritsky, who dominated both in grappling and striking against American fighter James Porter. The catchweight contest was set at 180 pounds, 10 pounds above Smotritsky’s usual welterweight division. Porter, a seasoned fighter with a history in the light heavyweight class, entered with a size and strength advantage, making Smotritsky’s victory all the more impressive.
Despite limited preparation time just four to five weeks and a back injury that sidelined his grappling for much of training camp, Smotritsky chose to press forward with the fight. “I didn’t want to lose out on this fight,” he later explained. “I wanted to get back to the win column… I believed in myself.”
The first round saw Smotritsky weather early attacks before executing a well-timed takedown. He pressed Porter against the cage and controlled the rest of the round from the top position. That strategy defined the remainder of the fight: calculated pressure, technical takedowns, and positional dominance.
In the second round, Smotritsky once again neutralized Porter’s power with superior wrestling. He took Porter’s back and nearly secured a rear-naked choke, showcasing his grappling acumen. While Porter escaped several submission attempts, Smotritsky never relinquished control.
By the third round, it was clear Smotritsky was ahead. “My corner told me to keep doing what I was doing,” he said. He followed their advice, executing another takedown and spending the final moments of the fight on top, delivering elbows and punches as the clock ran out.
After the fight, tension flared unexpectedly when one of Porter’s coaches insulted Smotritsky, calling him a “shitty fighter” and “garbage.” Smotritsky, visibly stunned, responded emotionally but remained firm in his commitment to martial arts values. “I grew up on martial arts values, and I believe more than anything in sportsmanship and in respecting your opponent,” he said. “My opponent was a real gentleman… but unfortunately, his coach wasn’t the same.”
Still, Smotritsky’s response was not one of bitterness, but of pride. He celebrated his win by donning his Star of David and hoisting the Israeli flag. After a challenging stretch of three losses, including one he believed was unfairly scored against him, the win felt both personal and symbolic.
“I dominated him for three rounds,” he reflected. “There wasn’t a second when I was in danger, and they couldn’t steal this win from me this time.”
In a sport that often values flair over fundamentals, Smotritsky’s focus on technique and self-belief shone through. His triumph serves as a reminder that Israeli athletes continue to represent their homeland with strength and honor even when far from home and facing more than just an opponent across the cage.
