Israeli Olympic Gold Medalist Dedicates Victory to IDF Soldiers
Tom Reuveny credits Israel's brave soldiers for his triumph in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Tom Reuveny, Israel's latest sports hero, has brought home the gold in Men’s Windsurfing from the 2024 Paris Olympics. Yet, the young champion’s triumph is more than just a personal victory. Upon his return to Israel, Reuveny humbly attributed his success to the courageous soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), who he said were his true inspiration.
Speaking at a press conference at Ben Gurion Airport, Reuveny, only 24 years old, expressed the profound impact that Israel’s soldiers had on his mindset during the competition. “Just before the deciding final race, I thought about the whole State of Israel,” Reuveny shared. “I knew that the gold would not just be for me.” His words reflected a deep connection to his homeland and a recognition of the sacrifices made by those who defend it.
Reuveny’s heartfelt acknowledgment extended to the families of fallen soldiers as well. “I want to offer a warm embrace to the families of the fallen,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. “Thanks to them, I’m even standing here, and thanks to them, we were able to go to this Olympics.” His comments resonated with the audience, highlighting the shared sense of national pride and unity.
Despite entering the Olympics as an underdog, Reuveny’s victory came as a surprise even to himself. “Nobody really expected this — and to be honest, I didn’t really expect to be here either,” he admitted with characteristic modesty. His unexpected win has captured the hearts of many, serving as a testament to perseverance and the power of determination.
In addition to his own success, Reuveny took the opportunity to honor the entire Israeli Olympic team, consisting of 88 athletes who represented their country with distinction. “Maybe they don’t all get the attention that I am getting,” he noted, urging the public to appreciate their efforts. “They worked so hard and they deserve so much.”
Israel’s performance in the Paris 2024 Olympics was historic, with the nation securing a record-breaking seven medals. This achievement surpasses the previous record of four medals from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, marking a significant milestone for Israeli sports.
Yael Arad, president of the Olympic Committee of Israel, praised the athletes for exceeding expectations during a challenging year. Despite the controversy surrounding Israel’s participation due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Israeli team showcased an indomitable spirit. “The athletes proved that the Israeli spirit is something that cannot be stopped,” Arad proudly declared.
Tom Reuveny’s victory is not just a personal achievement; it is a celebration of Israel’s resilience and strength. His dedication to the IDF soldiers and the entire nation reflects the unbreakable bond between Israel's people and those who protect it.
