Israeli Paramedic Shields Newborn During Missile Alert

A dramatic ambulance birth in southern Israel turned into a moment of courage when a paramedic protected a newborn during a missile warning.

Life often arrives in the most unexpected ways. For one newborn in southern Israel, the first moments outside the womb unfolded in an ambulance on the side of a highway, under the sound of a missile alert.

In a scene that captured both the fragility of life and the courage of those who protect it, Magen David Adom paramedic Elad Pas shielded a newborn baby with his own body moments after the child was delivered during an emergency call.

The medical team had been transporting a 23-year-old woman whose contractions were rapidly intensifying. The hospital was still some distance away, but it quickly became clear the baby would not wait.

“We understood there was a very high probability that the birth was about to happen,” Pas recalled.

When the team reached the mother, another ambulance crew had already begun assisting her. Within moments, the paramedics realized the delivery would need to take place immediately.

Inside the ambulance, the team carefully helped bring the baby into the world. The newborn soon began crying as the medical staff quickly cleaned him and checked both mother and child to ensure they were stable.

Then everything changed.

Just seconds after the baby was born, the paramedics received an alert on their phones warning that a missile had been launched toward southern Israel.

Emergency responders in Israel operate with strict safety protocols when rocket or missile sirens sound. But this situation was far from routine. The mother had just given birth, making it impossible to move her outside the vehicle.

“She had just delivered,” Pas explained. “We couldn’t take her out.”

The newborn, only seconds old, was entirely dependent on the team surrounding him.

“The baby is helpless,” Pas said. “Those are his first breaths in the world.”

The paramedics quickly pulled the ambulance to what they believed was the safest position nearby. They rushed to put on helmets and protective vests while securing the mother and the person accompanying her.

Then Pas focused on the most vulnerable life inside the vehicle.

“I held the baby and covered him,” he said. “You instinctively protect him.”

Cradling the newborn in his arms, Pas shielded the child with his body while the missile alert continued. The moment lasted only minutes, but it left a deep impression on everyone involved.

For the paramedic, the situation represented a powerful contrast between two realities. Birth normally symbolizes joy, hope, and celebration. Yet this baby’s arrival occurred amid the dangers of war.

“Birth is something very joyful,” Pas said. “Life is coming into the world.”

Much of the work performed by emergency responders involves confronting tragedy or severe medical crises. Delivering a baby is one of the rare moments that brings immediate happiness.

“A lot of our work is dealing with people in very difficult situations,” he explained. “When there is a birth, it’s something optimistic.”

But in this case, that happiness was mixed with the tension of an incoming missile threat.

“On one hand, a baby had just been born,” Pas reflected. “On the other hand, we are living in a reality of war.”

For those few tense minutes, his role became simple and clear. Protect the newborn until the danger passed.

Soon the siren ended and the immediate threat subsided. The ambulance crew was able to resume its journey to the hospital, where the mother and baby could receive further care.

For Pas, the experience has become one of those unforgettable moments that define a career in emergency medicine. Paramedics often stand at the intersection of life’s most intense experiences, witnessing tragedy, survival, and sometimes new beginnings.

“Our work deals with extreme situations,” he said.

This time, the danger did not come from illness or injury but from the missiles threatening civilians across the region. Yet in the middle of that danger, a new life had arrived.

The baby’s first moments on Earth were spent in the arms of a paramedic determined to keep him safe.
