Israeli Students Send Satellites Into Space in Historic Launch

Nine tiny satellites, no bigger than shoeboxes, soared into orbit from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base, carrying the ambitions of Israeli high school students and the limitless possibilities of their dreams. The historic launch, part of the Israel Space Agency’s “Tevel 2” program, has captivated classrooms across the country, proving that space exploration is no longer reserved for elite scientists or billionaires.

In Yirka, a Druze village in northern Israel, families celebrated as their children made history by constructing the first Druze-built satellite. Elders who never had the opportunity to complete formal education now proudly watch as their grandchildren master the complexities of satellite technology.

In Herzliya, once-distracted students now eagerly debate orbital mechanics, monitoring real-time data from their satellite’s journey through space. Meanwhile, in the Negev town of Yeruham, where high unemployment has long been a challenge, students take shifts at their satellite ground station, tracking their work as it soars above them.

In Givat Shmuel, a different transformation is unfolding. Their satellite station has become a community hub where younger students gather, inspired by their older peers, learning firsthand that the vastness of space is within reach for anyone willing to chase it.

Perhaps the most poignant satellite is the one launched by students from Shaar HaNegev. As it orbits, it carries the names of those lost in the October 7 Hamas massacre and the subsequent war in Gaza, ensuring their memory lives on with each pass. The names appear on the Israel Space Agency’s website every time the satellite comes into range—a tribute etched in the stars.

These satellites will remain active for about three years before eventually burning up in the atmosphere. Yet, their impact on the students and their communities will endure, inspiring a new generation of Israeli pioneers to reach for the stars.
