Israeli Middle Schoolers Triumph at Yale Debate Championship

Amid the echoes of debate and scholarship at Yale University, a group of Israeli middle school students from Petah Tikva made their mark on the global stage and returned home with glory.

Fifteen students from Ehad Ha’Am Middle School competed in the prestigious World Scholar’s Cup finals, a gathering of over 2,500 young minds from across the globe. Representing Israel with pride, the delegation brought home an impressive ten trophies and a multitude of gold medals, finishing with a top-three global team ranking and standout performances in debate and academic challenges.

The students, led by dedicated educator Vardina Oss and coach Yaffa Gluska, spent months preparing for the international showdown. Competing against native English speakers from countries including Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Qatar, Germany, and the UK, the Israeli team demonstrated academic excellence, eloquence, and unmatched determination.

For the students, the experience went far beyond the awards. Ori Tovis described the surreal moment of hearing their names called before an audience of thousands, saying, “It was incredible to represent Israel and our school at such a high-level competition.” His classmate, Yael Literat, called the week “unforgettable,” while Neri Alon recounted the nerve-wracking wait for results a moment that ended in triumph.

One of the most heartening aspects of the event was the atmosphere itself. Despite international tensions, the team felt embraced. Coach Gluska noted the competition’s intentionally apolitical spirit. “The support was mutual,” she said. “We were welcomed warmly, and although we traveled with security, it thankfully wasn’t needed.” That sense of respect and camaraderie left a lasting impression on both students and staff.

These young scholars didn’t just compete they proved that with dedication, preparation, and belief, Israeli youth can shine in any arena. Their story is a reflection of Israel’s broader values: a commitment to education, global engagement, and striving for excellence, even in the face of obstacles.
