Eternal Legacy of Janusz Korczak

Reflecting on the profound impact of a Polish Jewish educator and the lasting memories of his final protégé.

Itzchak Belfer's life was indelibly shaped by his early years at Janusz Korczak's orphanage on Krochmalna Street in Warsaw. Even though Belfer passed away in 2021, his soul forever carries the memories and teachings of Korczak, a notable Polish Jewish doctor and educator whose philosophy on child welfare and dignity transcended his own life.

Born Henryk Goldszmit, Janusz Korczak was a pioneering figure who dedicated his life to the betterment and care of orphaned children. Appointed the director of a Jewish orphanage in Warsaw in 1912, Korczak introduced revolutionary ideas about child rights and care. His belief that children should be treated with the same respect as adults was radical at the time and became a cornerstone of his educational philosophy.

Korczak’s commitment was put to the ultimate test during World War II. Despite the dangerous and oppressive conditions under German occupation, and multiple offers to escape to safety, Korczak refused to leave his orphans. His resolve led him and 200 children from his orphanage to the Umschlagplatz, from where they were deported to Treblinka and murdered in 1942.

For Belfer, Korczak was more than just a guardian; he was a visionary who impacted his life profoundly. Belfer's artistic work continued to resonate with Korczak’s teachings, portraying not just his own memories but also the essence of Korczak's spirit and dedication. Through his drawings and paintings, Belfer shared vivid recollections of the orphanage and its nurturing environment, underscored by Korczak’s and his assistant Stepha Wilczyńska’s unwavering dedication to their children.

This poignant story of Belfer, the last of Korczak’s boys, serves as a powerful testament to the enduring influence of Korczak’s ideals. It highlights a narrative of unmatched commitment to human dignity and the welfare of children, principles that continue to inspire and guide educators and caregivers around the world.
