Seinfeld Takes on Anti-Israel Hecklers: 'You Just Gave More Money to a Jew'
Comedian's Quick Wit Turns Disruption into a Lesson on Comedy and Bigotry.
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld confronted a pro-Palestinian protester over the weekend who disrupted his comedy show in Melbourne, Australia. The protester accused Seinfeld of supporting “genocide,” prompting the comedian to respond with his signature quick wit.
Performing at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday night, Seinfeld addressed the interruption with humor, saying, “Oh, you’re back. They’re back! The protesters are back! I’ve missed you!” His remarks were met with applause and laughter from the audience.
Seinfeld drew a comparison between his profession and the protester's actions, explaining, “Our business is to get people to see things the way we see. The problem is you’re in the wrong place. … You hear how well I’m doing? This is what you want. You want to do well, like I am, looking at the people here to hear me, look at what happened to you.”
He added that disrupting a comedy show was as ineffective as if he were to perform stand-up at a sporting event, highlighting the importance of context. Seinfeld then pointed out the irony of the situation: “I think you need to go back and tell who’s ever running your organization, ‘We just gave more money to a Jew.’ That cannot be a good plan for you. That’s not what you want! That’s the whole problem! You got to come up with a better plan.”
This incident was not Seinfeld's first encounter with anti-Semitic protesters in Australia. Earlier this month, during a performance at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Seinfeld faced a similar disruption. He responded by mocking the protester’s chant, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” with the retort, “It’s a comedy show, you moron! Get out of here.”
Seinfeld’s ability to turn hostile interruptions into comedic moments resonated with his audience, who cheered and supported his handling of the situation. His remarks underscored the absurdity of protesting a comedy show and emphasized the unifying power of humor.
