Katz Halts Controversial Detention Orders for Jews in West Bank

Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Friday that Israel will no longer use administrative detention orders against Jews in the West Bank. "In the current climate, where Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria face significant threats of Palestinian terrorism, supported by the Iranian axis of evil, it is not appropriate for the State of Israel to take such a severe step," Katz stated. He explained that suspected criminal activity should be addressed through prosecution or alternative preventive measures that do not infringe on citizens’ rights through administrative detention.

Katz underscored his opposition to violence, stating, “I unequivocally condemn any acts of violence against Palestinians and taking the law into one’s own hands.” He also stressed the importance of preserving the rule of law to allow security forces to focus on combating terrorism effectively.

Administrative detention orders, which allow individuals to be held without formal charges, have long been criticized by settlers and their advocates as discriminatory. While existing orders will not be revoked, Katz indicated they will not be renewed upon expiration.

The decision was met with widespread support from key political figures. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich praised Katz for what he called "a courageous and necessary decision" to abolish what he described as "long-standing discrimination." Smotrich highlighted that the policy had unfairly treated settlers as "second-class citizens," applying measures typically reserved for terrorists and enemies of the state.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also celebrated the decision, calling it "a correction of an injustice of many years." In a social media post, Ben-Gvir lauded Katz as a strong and principled leader, commending his dedication to justice and the rights of those living in Judea and Samaria.

The decision comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with ongoing threats of terrorism and international scrutiny of Israel’s policies in Judea and Samaria.
