Macron calls Israel’s Gaza strategy a disaster waiting to happen
French president urges UN-backed coalition to stabilize Gaza and demands permanent ceasefire.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday sharply criticized Israel’s plan to intensify its military operation in Gaza, calling it “a disaster waiting to happen” and warning that both Israeli hostages and the people of Gaza would suffer most from the consequences.
Speaking publicly on the matter, Macron urged Israel to halt its campaign and agree to a permanent ceasefire, framing the move as essential to preventing further tragedy. He proposed forming an international coalition, operating under a United Nations mandate, to stabilize Gaza in the aftermath of the conflict.
“The first victims will be the hostages and the people of Gaza,” Macron said, stressing that renewed escalation would only deepen the humanitarian crisis and make diplomacy harder.
Israel’s government, however, has maintained that dismantling Hamas’ military capabilities and ensuring Gaza can no longer be used as a base for attacks are non-negotiable prerequisites for lasting peace. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected calls for a premature ceasefire, warning it would leave Hamas intact and embolden further terrorism.
Macron’s comments reflect growing pressure from European leaders for a shift in Israel’s approach, even as Jerusalem insists that its strategy is aimed at securing the release of hostages and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
The debate underscores a stark divide between Israel’s security priorities and international demands for immediate de-escalation a divide that remains at the heart of the ongoing diplomatic struggle.
