Milei Receives 2,000-Year-Old Freedom of Zion Coin in Jerusalem Ceremony

Argentine president honors Israel’s ancient heritage and strengthens Argentina’s deepening bond with the Jewish state.

In a powerful and symbolic ceremony at the City of David National Park in Jerusalem, Argentine President Javier Milei was presented with a 2,000-year-old coin from the time of the Second Temple, dated to 67 CE during the Jewish Great Revolt. The coin, bearing the ancient Hebrew inscription "For the Freedom of Zion," served as a profound recognition of Milei’s unwavering support for Israel and the Jewish people.

The ceremony marked another historic moment in Milei’s growing partnership with Israel. During the event, the Government of Argentina unveiled a commemorative plaque at the City of David, underscoring the deep connection between the Argentine nation, the people of Israel, and the eternal capital, Jerusalem. Argentina now becomes only the second country, after the United States in 2020, to place such a plaque at the ancient site.

Standing amid the archaeological remains of biblical Jerusalem, President Milei spoke with reverence about the significance of the occasion. “The continued uncovering of history here and the future development of this city are of the utmost international importance,” he declared. “The values upon which the Republic is founded justice and liberty were born here thousands of years ago. Today, we have the privilege of walking in the light of those same values.”

Milei went on to emphasize Jerusalem’s role as a spiritual cornerstone for billions around the world. “The roots of Judaism and Christianity, followed today by billions of people, originate right here from Jerusalem. This place is essentially the foundation of the entire world.”

City of David Chairman and Israel Prize laureate David Be’eri stressed the global importance of Argentina’s declaration. “Especially in these times, as antisemitism is on the rise and the historical connection between the Jewish people and Jerusalem is being denied, the declaration by the Government of Argentina carries great significance,” Be’eri stated. “This important declaration serves as a moral and ethical compass for the entire world.”

The newly unveiled plaque reads in part “In the City of David, the site of Biblical Jerusalem, where history and faith merge, we honor the eternal aspiration for liberty and justice... President Javier Milei has bravely defended the value of liberty, while celebrating the deep historical and ancestral ties with Israel.”

President Milei was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Argentina's Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein, Presidential Secretary Karina Milei, Argentina's Ambassador to Israel Rabbi Shimon Axel Wahnish and his wife. Also present were Israel’s Sephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar and City of David Chairman David Be’eri.

Though originally delayed due to health reasons, Milei’s visit to Jerusalem demonstrated his government’s firm stance as one of Israel’s most loyal allies on the global stage. His consistent public support, recognition of Israel’s ancient rights, and recent pledges including moving Argentina’s embassy to Jerusalem have elevated Argentina’s position as a key partner of the Jewish state.
