Miriam Feirberg, Mayor of Netanya, Passes Away at 74
After nearly three decades of transformative leadership, Israel mourns the loss of a trailblazing public servant.

Miriam Feirberg, the longtime mayor of Netanya and one of Israel’s most respected municipal leaders, passed away on Friday at the age of 74 after a prolonged battle with a serious illness. She died at home, leaving behind a legacy of public service that reshaped the face of her city and earned her admiration across the political spectrum.
For nearly 30 years, Feirberg led Netanya with determination, vision, and a deep commitment to its residents. She became synonymous with the city itself her name evoking bold development, community care, and a relentless drive to make Netanya a model for urban progress.
The municipality released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss: “She served the city with a sense of mission, devotion, and endless commitment. With her captivating smile, Miriam became the face of Netanya in Israel and around the world.”
National leaders paid tribute to Feirberg’s life and legacy. President Isaac Herzog called her “a larger-than-life woman… a true leader with a heart of gold and deep social sensitivity.” He added that her influence could be seen in every corner of Netanya and felt in the hearts of its residents.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed those sentiments, describing her as someone who “lived, breathed, and dreamed Netanya,” and whose leadership fueled decades of unprecedented growth and development. “She dedicated her life to public service and bold, forward-looking urban development,” he said.
Defense Minister Israel Katz expressed deep sorrow at the loss of “a close and dear friend,” and praised her as a public figure whose impact went far beyond city limits. Opposition leader Yair Lapid noted her transformative contributions to local culture and sports.
Feirberg was more than just a city leader she was a trailblazer. One of the first women to serve as mayor in Israel, she broke barriers with grace and purpose. Under her leadership, Netanya expanded its infrastructure, improved its education system, boosted tourism, and built a stronger cultural identity.
Her leadership was personal as much as professional. Residents remember her as accessible, tireless, and deeply involved in every initiative. Whether advocating for neighborhood renovations, expanding youth programs, or improving city services, Feirberg worked with the conviction that every citizen mattered.
As tributes pour in from across the nation, one thing is clear: Miriam Feirberg’s leadership left an indelible mark not just on Netanya, but on the entire State of Israel.
