Hamas Claims Mohammed Sinwar Still Alive Amid Conflicting Reports

Israeli intelligence suggests the senior terrorist may have been eliminated, but Hamas continues to deny his death.

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the fate of senior Hamas operative Mohammed Sinwar, as a top Hamas official claimed Monday that Israel’s recent operation to eliminate him was unsuccessful.

Osama Hamdan, a senior member of Hamas, told the Tehran Times a media outlet aligned with Iran’s regime that Mohammed Sinwar remains alive and actively engaged in fighting Israeli forces. “Our brothers in Gaza have assured us that Mohammed Sinwar is alive and still fighting the enemy firmly,” Hamdan claimed, dismissing Israeli reports as a cover for military strikes on civilian areas.

This statement directly contradicts remarks made a day earlier by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that there are “rising indications” that Sinwar was indeed killed.

According to Israeli intelligence, Sinwar was targeted during a high-level Hamas leadership meeting reportedly held in a bunker beneath Khan Yunis’s European Hospital. The operation, carried out by the IDF’s 162nd Division alongside specialized infantry and tank units, was one of the most significant efforts to dismantle Hamas’s top-tier leadership.

Despite no official confirmation, early assessments linked Sinwar’s presumed death to intelligence that revealed the meeting’s location. Around the same time, sources indicated that Sinwar’s body was allegedly discovered with approximately a dozen of his aides, including Rafah Brigade commander Mohammed Shabana.

The IDF has so far refrained from issuing a definitive statement, noting only that foreign reports of Sinwar's death remain unconfirmed.

Mohammed Sinwar, born in 1975 in the Khan Yunis refugee camp, is the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’s top leader in Gaza, who was killed by Israeli forces in October 2024. Yahya’s death was confirmed through fingerprint and dental records from his time in Israeli custody.

The death of both Sinwar brothers if officially verified would mark a significant operational and psychological blow to Hamas’s leadership. While Hamas’s propaganda machinery attempts to maintain morale through denials, the IDF continues its precision efforts to dismantle the group’s upper echelons.

As Israel presses forward in its mission to secure the homeland, the fog of war remains thick. Yet one thing is clear: the IDF’s pursuit of justice for October 7’s atrocities remains relentless.
