Netanyahu’s Full Speech Following the Elimination of Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar
"We settled accounts with the mastermind of October 7, but the war is far from over."
In a statement on October 17, 2024, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation following the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. Netanyahu confirmed that Sinwar, the mastermind behind the deadly October 7 massacres, was eliminated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in an operation in Gaza.
"Citizens of Israel," Netanyahu began, "a year ago, as we celebrated the festival of Sukkot, Yahya Sinwar was preparing the worst massacre in the history of our people since the Holocaust." He continued, "I stand before you today to tell you that Yahya Sinwar has been eliminated. The mass murderer who killed thousands of Israelis and abducted hundreds of our people was eliminated today by our heroic soldiers."
Netanyahu referred to the operation as a critical moment in Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas, noting that while Sinwar's death marked a significant victory, the conflict was far from over. "Today, evil suffered a heavy blow, but our mission is not yet completed," he said.
Addressing the families of the hostages taken by Hamas, Netanyahu reassured them that Israel's commitment to bringing them home remains unwavering. "We will continue with full force until all your loved ones our loved ones are returned home. That is our supreme obligation."
Netanyahu also spoke directly to the residents of Gaza, blaming Sinwar for their suffering. "Sinwar destroyed your lives. He told you he was a lion, but in practice, he hid in a dark tunnel and was eliminated when he fled in panic from our soldiers."
The Prime Minister went on to declare that Hamas would never rule Gaza again. "This is the beginning of the day after Hamas, and this is an opportunity for you, residents of Gaza, to finally be free of its tyranny," he said.
In his address, Netanyahu called on Hamas terrorists to surrender, warning that those who harm Israeli hostages would face retribution. "Those who harm our hostages, his blood is on his head, and we will settle accounts with him."
Netanyahu ended his speech with a message of hope, urging the region's people to seize the opportunity to create a future of peace. "In Gaza, in Beirut, in the streets of the entire area, the darkness is withdrawing, and the light is rising."
He expressed deep gratitude to the IDF and Shin Bet forces for their bravery, acknowledging the heavy toll the war continues to take. "The war is harsh and it takes a heavy price from us," Netanyahu said, offering condolences to the families of fallen soldiers.
Netanyahu concluded by quoting King David: "I will pursue my enemies and destroy them. And I will not turn back until they are wiped out." He urged the nation to remain united and resilient in the face of ongoing challenges. "Together we will fight, and with God’s help, together we will win."
