Netanyahu Condemns Macron’s Call to Stop Arms to Israel as ‘A Disgrace’

The Israeli Prime Minister calls the proposal a disgrace, vowing victory with or without support.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu harshly criticized French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday after Macron suggested halting arms shipments to Israel as part of a broader effort to resolve the conflict in Gaza. In a pre-recorded video, Netanyahu slammed the proposal, calling it a "disgrace" and expressing outrage at what he perceives as an arms embargo on Israel by certain Western leaders.

“Shame on them,” Netanyahu said, referring to Macron and others advocating for restrictions on military aid to Israel. He emphasized that Israel would emerge victorious with or without international backing, resolute in his stance that the country has the right to defend itself.

Macron's remarks came during an interview with France Inter radio, where he called for halting arms used in the Gaza conflict, stressing the need to return to a political solution. While France is not a major supplier of weapons to Israel only shipping about 30 million euros’ worth of military equipment in 2022 Macron’s comments stirred tensions amid the ongoing conflict.

“Our priority now is to avoid escalation,” Macron said, highlighting concerns about Lebanon potentially becoming embroiled in the conflict. He warned that the Lebanese people should not be sacrificed in the process.

Macron’s statement coincides with a diplomatic visit to the region by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who is wrapping up a four-day trip to the Middle East, including a stop in Israel. France hopes to play a role in reviving diplomatic talks, but Netanyahu's response underscores the growing rift between Israel and some of its Western allies.

While Macron's intentions focus on de-escalation and diplomacy, Netanyahu's sharp retort makes clear that Israel will not tolerate any efforts to limit its defensive capabilities during a time of conflict.
